When I began downloading wad files from the internet I had to pretty much
learn by trial and error how to deal with them. Hopefully, this .txt file
will help any beginners out there to learn how to use these downloadable
files.

Here at the CNA offices, (Computer Networking Assoc., LLC.) we have a dist-
inct advantage in internet use over most folks on their home computers.
Being an internet provider, we have access to ISDN speed in the downloading
process. On a good morning I can download at about a meg a minute, at home
I'd be lucky to get a meg an hour at 28.8! Additionally, on our network
server, we have enough disc space to keep 100 meg or so of extra wad levels
for DOOM, DOOM2, Heretic, & Hexen. My point is this: WADS take up space
and time. Suggestion: Download one, play it till you're bored with it, and
delete it. Then go get a new one. My personal DOOM 2 directory at home is
over 200 meg and and growing. It's not a computer, it's a DOOMPUTER!

Most Doom2 wads that you can download from the net will come to you zipped.
That means that the file has been shrunk up using a shareware program called
pkzip. In order to unshrink this file (explode) you will need a copy of
pkunzip.exe which can be found on the net for free.

Of course, if you are reading this file, you already have a copy. Don't you?

Oh well, download the file and unzip it. Usually, the file will explode into
2 or 3 files.

Example:

wad.zip explodes into wad.wad
                                              wad.txt
                                              file_id.diz

Wad.wad is the game level, ie. the software that makes your doom2 do some-
thing new. Wad.txt is the file like my twenty.txt where the author tells
all the good stuff about his wad. File_id.diz is usually the bbs service
that the author belongs to.

Anyway go ahead and move the .wad file into your Doom 2 directory.

Now, at the doom2 prompt (also known as the command line) type:

Doom2 -file wad.wad

Now hit enter. The game will use the added wad as a replacement for the
map level the wad is written for. The .txt file will tell you which map
level the wad is for.

Now then, all this is great if the wad is written for level 1. The game
will start like usual but when you get to the first game screen the new
wad will be there instead of the normal DOOM2 screen.

If the wad is written for map level 2 for example, type your command line
so:

doom2 -file wad.wad -warp 2

Now hit enter. Now the game will go directly to the second map level. No
title sceens, no difficulty screen, just straight to map02.

When you run 32.wad, this is what the command line in the .bat file I
have written for you looks like:

Doom2.exe -file 32.wad -warp 1 -skill 3

Okay, the dash file command replaces the 32 map levels of Doom 2.
The
-warp command tells doom to go ahead to the first level without stopping
at the title screen. The -skill command tells the software to start you
out on skill level three!!! Good Luck.

If you don't like playing on skill level 3, edit go32.bat and change
the 3 to a number you do like. (1 thru 5)

If you take a look at the readme.exe file provided with your registered
copy of DOOM 2, you will find a list of all the -commands that make the
software do neat stuff. (Try out -altdeath)
