X-RATED.WAD, version 1.0 (01-09-1995)

INTRODUCTION

When I started with the composition of this extraordinary (you will certainly
agree) Patch WAD, I first intended to make it look like an adventure-game, in
which you would have the possibility to make almost fatal mistakes (e.g. that
you could kill a sprite that you were supposed to save). Thanks to the discus-
sions about the use of DEHACKED, that I had to use for that purpose I decided
not to do so; because I not only want to build a unique Patch WAD, I also
want it to be spread around the world as far as possible and certainly not be
limited by copyrights. My first and most important motivation however was to
build an X-rated wad-file that was entertaining and was not only stuffed with
pics from sleezy magazines that have no relations with the game or the story.
I hope I did succeed in that.
Maybe later I will finish and spread that version, which will not only be X-
rated but also C-rated (then called C-RATED.WAD or something). The beauty of
it however will be devastating.

THE STORY

Okay and now for the story or better .... your mission. A cute, blond (why they
always have to be blond?), innocent girls is (you won't believe it till you
see it) kidnapped by aliens and as far as you can judge they will do mean, and
I mean very mean, things to her. So there is only one thing you can do in
those cases: SAVE HER BY FEROCIOUS FORCE. "Why" you would ask. It's because
of your limited persuasive verbal capacities on extragalactic negotiations.
Beware: I've heard rumours these alien guys already made mutated clones of her,
but I'm not sure. You simply have to find out.
Furthermore it's important for you to know that she is held captive in an
isolated movie theatre (adults only!). So if you think you've got plenty of
time left and ignore her heartbreaking cries, you can always take a look at
one or more of the movies. By the way the only currency that's accepted
there are 'chewing yellow skull coins'.

BUT DON'T BE TOO LATE. She is in REAL distress !

INSTRUCTIONS

This level is built for DOOM 2 (version 1.666) MAP01. If you unzip X-RATED.ZIP
in your Doom2 directory (and you simply have to, to let it work) the extracted
files will occupy exactly 1,995,901 (!) bytes of harddisk space (I finished
the whole thing on September the 1st of 1995; inspired by win1995 ? you think,
well maybe).
To play it without letting DOOM crashing almost immediately you first ought to
install (=append) all the sprites by typing 'XINSTALL' This process will need
about 1 minute and about 3,5 MB diskspace extra (win95 uses a lot more). By
entering 'XRESTORE' you bring back X-RATED.WAD to its original size, but you
won't be able to play it without appending the sprites. All your original
DOOM-files will be left unchanged (!). By entering 'X-RATED' you start this
level for playing.
I switched off the messages because they will be irrelevant and spoil the game.
Hint: you can also play it with maximum screensize (no status bar). It will
improve the display of the graphics.

CONTENTS OF X-RATED.ZIP

X-README.1ST The text-file you are reading now
X-RATED.WAD the complete PWAD-file with the new level, musics, sounds
                 graphics, sprites and animations.
DEUSF.EXE; XINSTALL.BAT, XRESTORE.BAT The tools for merging and restoring.
X-RATED.BAT The batch-file to let it finally start up.

BUGS

This WAD-file runs without problems on a 486DX, 8mb or better. I'm not sure
what will happen on a slower system and/or with less memory. Some rooms are
simply stuffed with animations, so probably the game will slow down. The
last room in the game occasionally had a 'visplane overflow error'. I think
I've fixed it, but I'm not sure, because I didn't want to remove too many
textures or linedefs. If it repeatedly occurs by you, let me know.
A slight bug or better an imperfection is that you can only kill about 80-90%
of the sprites. This and other minor disturbances will be fixed in C-RATED.

SOFTWARE I USED

Level Editors: DEUTEX, WINTEX, DEU, WINDEU, DEUSF, NWT, RMB, BSP
Sound Editors: Sound Blaster Pro WAVE-Studio, VEDIT2, VOC2WAV, MIDI2MUS
Graphic Editors: Windows Paint, PSP 2.0, DOOMPAL.PAL, PIXFOLIO, SCREENTHIEF,
DISPLAY 1.87 and NEOPAINT (registered version for all the
                 retouching and painting)

Despite of all the problems I encountered by inserting new graphics in DOOM,
I was able to maintain sufficient quality in the pictures, despite all the
dithering, cropping, format-changes, resizing (sometimes more than 25%),
making Frames from scratch, changing to the DOOM-palette, etc. The only
thing the graphics remain sensitive about is the light level. Changing
the light level will often result in dramatic color changes and this fenomena
almost always occurs when you're approaching a graphic (sprite or texture).
In a few cases I was able to improve the looks of the original picture.
Sometimes they feel quite pleasant in the DOOM-environment and follow the
changes in the light level in a very natural way.

THANKS TO ..
