Herian2 Installation instructions:

NOTE: HERIAN2 WILL ONLY WORK FULLY WITH ZDOOM VERSION 1.17 OR
LATER. IF YOU DO NOT HAVE ZDOOM THEN YOU MUST DOWNLOAD
IT NOW. YOU WILL FIND A LINK TO THE ZDOOM WEBSITE FROM
      WITHIN THE HERIAN2 WEBSITE:
		http://freespace.virgin.net/i.w/
===========================================================

INTRODUCTION:

These instruction are based on the assumption that you already
have ZDoom installed on you PC in a folder called ZDOOM. If
this is not the case either install ZDOOM in this way or
substitute for ZDOOM the name of the folder on your PC
containing ZDoom.

Herian2 is distributed as a zip file (HERIAN2.ZIP) and must
be extracted into your ZDOOM folder.

Most of the levels are large and the game is designed
primarily with single play in mind.

Herian2 requires an iD Software main IWAD such as DOOM2,
TNT or PLUTONIA in order to run and one of these should also
be in your ZDOOM folder.

Herian2 will not work with DOOM or ULTIMATE-DOOM.

Use INSTH2D2.BAT for installation if you have DOOM2.WAD in
your ZDoom folder.

Use INSTH2P2.BAT for installation if you have PLUTONIA.WAD
in your ZDoom folder.

Use INSTH2T2.BAT for installation if you have TNT.WAD in
your ZDoom folder.

Don't attempt to play Herian2 using any executable other
than ZDoom. It simply doesn't work. Herian2 may initially
appear to work possibly with Boom or MBF but you will not be
able to complete the game. Another point is that ZDoom's
ability to look up and down is a definate advantage for
playing Herian2. Once your used to it playing without it
gives a very restricted feel to the game.

HERIAN2.WAD will not work until it is processed by the
install programme.
==========================================================

INSTALLATION:

Ensure either DOOM2.WAD, PLUTONIA.WAD or TNT.WAD is in your
ZDoom folder then unzip HERIAN2.ZIP in there.

You will have unzipped the following files -

deusf.exe - installer
herian2.wad - to be processed by the installer
insth2d2.bat - installs with Doom2
insth2p2.bat - installs with Plutonia
insth2t2.bat - installs with TNT
herian2.txt - about Herian2
readthis.txt - this file

plus four shortcuts (see later).

Within Windows95/98/NT Explorer double-click on the
installation batch file (for example INSTH2D2.BAT) and
wait a few seconds until Herian has been processed.

A DOS box will appear telling you what is going on during
installation.

None of your original files will be affected by the
installation of Herian2 if you follow the instructions
properly.

All that you require for playing Herian2 with the exception
of the main IWAD (Doom2, Plutonia or TNT which you must
already own) can be located via the Herian website at
http://freespace.virgin.net/i.w/

You next need to follow the instruction for using shortcuts
for starting Herian2.

==========================================================
SHORTCUTS:

There are four shortcuts prepared for playing Herian2 as
follows:

HERIAN2 - normal Doom weapons, default characters (for
          Herian2) and no background music.

HERIAN2 (MUSIC) - as above but with music (if you have
                  downloaded that option).

HERIAN2 (HRTC) - fantasy weapons and characters (if you
                 downloaded that option). No music.

HERIAN2 (HRTC MUSIC) - fantasy weapons, characters and Music
                       (if you downloaded those options).

I have enclosed shortcuts for all Herian2 play options within
the zip file. They will appear in your ZDoom folder when you
unzip the contents of HERIAN2.ZIP and optional ZIP's there.
Provided that you leave all of the contents of this zip file
in your ZDoom folder then they will work if your path is:

C:\ZDOOM\

If not then you will need to modify the properties for these
shortcuts.

The simplest action is for you to copy the shortcuts, one at
a time for the ones that you want to try, from within your
ZDoom folder (do this in Explorer by right-clicking your
mouse on the selected shortcut and selecting "Copy"), then
simply expose the Windows 95/98/NT desktop and paste them
directly there by right-clicking your mouse and selecting
"Paste".

If you need to modify them, for example to change the path,
then after the shortcut appears on your desktop right-click
on it and select "Properties". You will see sections
called "Start in:" and "Target:". These are where you alter
the parameters for Herian2's path and options. For example
if you ZDoom path is: D:\GAMES\ZDOOM then carefully edit
both of these sections to show the correct path.

By default I have given each shortcut a heapsize of 16 within
the shortcut properties target in order to avoid problems when
playing at high resolutions (such as 800 x 600). If you play
at a lower resolution (640 x 400 is fine) then this might be
unnecessary so simply change it to 12 or 10. ZDoom has a
default setting of 8 and in my experience this is fine at
640 x 400 so if this is the resolution that you use then edit
out the -heapsize from the shortcut if you like. If you get a
"Malloc" error at any time then increase the heapsize again.

PLAYING HERIAN2 FOR THE FIRST TIME:

When you come to play Herian2 for the first time there are
a couple of things that you need to do as soon as
practicable after the starting the first level:

Press F4 and go to the Gameplay options.

Use the default settings (v1.17) except for:

	Essential -
	Disable JUMPING.
Herian2 is not designed to use this feature. For
Herian2 it is virtually a form of cheat because in
places you can use it to bypass sections of some
levels. Use it and you might as well play Herian2
with "NOCLIP" turned on and go walking through the
walls. In other words the game becomes pointless.
Level design to make use of jumping needs a
fundamentally different approach along the lines
of Hexen. Walls, etc. need to be higher in the
event that you don't want your character to be
able to jump over them and then in Doom, where
the player characters tend to be smaller than in
Hexen you are struggling to looking over that
	wall.

	Thoroughly recommended -
	Enable FALL DAMAGE

When you have made the two changes escape back into the
game and immediately save. These two alterations will now
be permanent while you enjoy Herian2 (provided that you
always restart Herian2 from a saved game) but will not
affect the preferred settings for your other ZDoom games.

SOME TIPS:

I recommend the following control setup for Herian2:

Use mouse and keyboard. Even if you are not used to this
try to change. It is the best way to play first person
perspective 3D games. I adapted from joypad (a shameful
admission, I know) and in about two hours I was becoming
a much better player.

If you agree do this -

Keyboard: strafe left - left arrow key
strafe right - right arrow key
walk forward - up arrow key
walk back - down arrow key
	   run - shift key
Mouse: left click	- shoot
right click - open doors, operate switches, etc.
	   push left - turn left
	   push right - turn right
	   push forward - look up
	   pull back - look down

Basically look upon mouse push/pull as your neck enabling you
to look in any direction.

Remember - Don't Jump or your cheating. Turn off Fall Damage
and your a wuss.
