                            HINTS

[WARNING: This file contains hints to each level of the
episode. It does not contain all of the secrets (You'll
have to find those on your own!). Only read ahead if you
are stuck, otherwise you will spoil your gaming experience
and waste all the time I spent trying to find new ways to
make your brain hurt! You have been warned!]

                           LEVEL 1

Q) How do I get out of this courtyard, I keep getting
killed?

A) There's a lot to kill in the beginning, and it's tough
with just a pistol. Make sure that you pick up ammo left
behind by dead soldiers---you'll need every bit of it! If
you're really getting hit hard by the enemies, you might
take a look at your map......notice anything interesting?
Like the yellow line to the left of the door where you
entered? Open it and you'll get something that will really
help you beat this level. (By the way, this level CAN be
beaten without using this item!)

                           LEVEL 2

Q) How do I get the Supershotgun on top of the fountain?

A) You asked me THAT? Come on, this is an easy one. Get
on the planter, run along the edge and jump into the
fountain (ouch, ohh, owww, that hurts!). Push on any side
of the fountain to lower the lift.

Q) How do I get the blue key?

A) Did you find the switch on the pillar? Hit the switch,
strafe left, then run as fast as you can to the alcove to
the left of the door. Jump down into the hole and hit the
switch. A pair of tunnels around the nukage falls will
open. Go inside and throw the switches that will build the
stairs up to the next level of the room. Take the stairs to
the east and throw the switch that's on the right hand wall.
Now, go back down into the tunnel, and throw the newly
exposed switch. A lift will lower behind you. Jump aboard
(don't forget your radiation suit!), and ride it up to the
top. You can now get the blue key.

Q) I've lowered the blue bars and have killed everything
in the room beyond. Now where is the red key?

A) You killed everything, huh? Okay, if you say so. Did
you try looking at the map? Did you notice the yellow line
on the wall on the right side of the room? You did? Did
you open the door? Did you throw the switch? Did you
collect all of those rockets? Did you go back outside? Did
you survive? Oh, sorry to hear that. Did you find the lift
that keeps going up and down? You did? Did you jump down
the hole and throw the switch that built the stairs up to
the console in the center of the main room? Did you throw
all of those switches? Did you live through it? You did?
Congratulations! Did you then find the red key? You did?
You found the red key? Well, if you found the red key then
why are you asking me all of these questions!!!!!!!

Q) HELP! I can't beat this Cyberdemon!!!!!!!!

A) I believe you, he's pretty damn tough to beat, isn't
he? Before taking him on, make sure to kill everything else
in the room. Then, collect every rocket you can carry. Try
collecting the ones down in the blood before you grab the
ones on top...this way if you run out in the middle of the
fight you won't have to go far to get more. When you're
ready, take the teleporter to the switch that drops the wall
exposing the Cyberdemon. You should pick up an
invincibility globe when you activate the switch. Now blast
him as much as you can! When the invincibility begins to
wear off, run to the left and jump down into the blood.
Grab the other invincibility globe that's next to the
teleporter (Hope you didn't already pick it up!). Teleport
back up top and let him have it again. When the
invincibility wears off this time, position yourself behind
the front set of pillars. Don't get too close to any of the
pillars or the rocket splash will kill you. Now, strafe
out, fire off a few rockets, then strafe back in behind the
pillar. If you can keep it up and avoid taking a rocket in
the face you'll eventually kill him. There should be PLENTY
of ammo to do it.

                           LEVEL 3

Q) Where is the exit?

A) Try searching around the tall metal columns in the
outdoor area. If you've thrown the switch that the Barons
were guarding you should be able to find it.

****Hint**** (There is a switch on the column above where the
yellow key is resting. If you haven't thoroughly explored
the outside area, you may want to wait before hitting the
switch.)

Q) I've killed the Archvile in the temple room, but I
can't get the door to the bridge open, and I can't get back
outside. What do I do?

A) In Doom, there are 3 ways to get a door open. Walk
over an area of floor that triggers it. Throw a switch that
opens it. Or shoot it with a pistol, shotgun, or chaingun.
Now you figure out which method is the right one.

                           Level 4

Q) That sure is a nice BFG I see through that window.
Could I have it please?

A) Well, there are two ways to get it. You need to find
the room that the Revenant is guarding and access the switch
that builds the stairs leading back out of the room. Once
you're on the stairs, you can jump over the barricades with
the flashing pillars and grab the red or blue key. There is
a door that will take you either up a flight or stairs, or
down a flight of stairs, depending on which barricade you
jumped over. Either way will take you to the end. If you
take the high road, you'll eventually get to a room with an
Archvile. Once you've killed him, you'll need to find the
switch that raises the stairs up to the platform he was
guarding. At the top of it you'll find a teleporter that
will take you to the BFG. (Note: there's a teleporter in an
alcove down in the nukage. That will take you back out to
the beginning, in case you'd like to backtrack and then take
the low road for 100% kills.). If you took the low road,
then you need to find the yellow key in the red hallway.
Once you find it, you can access the switch that drops the
teleporter in the room that the Barons were guarding. The
teleporter will take you to the triangular ledge to your
upper right. If you now drop down to your right, you can go
through the teleporter again. It will again take you to the
next ledge to the upper right. If you keep dropping down to
the right and going through the teleporter you'll eventually
get to a section with an alcove containing a teleporter.
The teleporter inside of the alcove takes you back out to
the beginning area of the game. If you take the teleporter
in the center of the room, it will take you to the end of
the level, bypassing the BFG! The teleporter that takes you
to the BFG is located just off a small hallway on the last
upper ledge that is to the LEFT of the door when you came
in. The only way to get there is to Jump from one ledge to
the other, where the distance between them narrows as they
near the central teleporter. Does this sound confusing?
Well you should have tried DESIGNING the stupid thing. If
you can't figure it out, then take the high road!

                           LEVEL 5

This level is just too complex to anticipate individual
problems. Here is a walkthru for the separate sections of
the level.:

Eastern Section:
Take curving stairs, then climb through window to the
left of the UAC door. Throw switch at top of passage. Exit
UAC door. Turn right, go into "fire" room and throw switch.
Leave room and go back downstairs. Kill anything you can on
upper level. Jump down into the lower level now.
Shhhhhhhh! Be very, very quiet or you'll wake up those
sleeping Cacodemons. AHD, ya woke `em up! Now ya gotta
kill them. Take the hallway behind the Cacodemons to the
top. Throw the switch on the wall. Go back down the hall
and through the door that's now open. Climb the stairs to
the upper level. Run and leap onto the platform where the
flashing light column is (This is a very tough jump). Press
on the lighted wall. The platform will lower exposing the
blue key.

Southern Section:
Jump down into the ravine. Press on nukage falls and
get a radiation suit. Enter the cetral area. Press on wall
between the two platforms to the north of the room. Throw
the switch to build the stairs. Climb up on platform and
jump across to the platform to the southwest. Throw the
switch that will open the door to the south of the room.
Climb stairs and go through hallway. Get yellow key. (Good
luck).

Western Section:
Kill everything you can in the red cavernous room, then
continue down the hallway to the west. Take the stairs all
the way to the very top. Open the door and kill the
chaingunner. Take the teleporter to the blue hallway. When
you teleport in, DO NOT WALK OFF OF THE TELEPORTER PAD!
Turn around----Ohhh, look, a switch! Throw the switch, then
take the hallway around and jump back down to the lower
level. Now, go back up the stairs, this time turning to the
first right hand passage. Open the door there and take the
walkway across. Enter the blue room and throw the switches.
Teleport back out and go back up the stairs, this time
skipping the first passage to the right. Continue up to the
next passage, go through the door and across the walkway to
the next room. Did you get trapped in the cage? Feel
around the walls. Did you raise the floor? Walk through
the wall into the transporter. Don't forget to throw the
switch before you leave. Uh oh, you got trapped OUTSIDE the
cage? Walk back out of the room into the hallway; you'll
reset the trap! Now follow above instructions and teleport
back out. Keep taking the next higher passage across the
room until you've thrown all the switches and worked your
way up to the top. The last switch will raise a platform
(Don't worry, it's coming, but it takes a long time to get
to the top!) Now you can get across and get the key. (Wow,
that's a lot of work!)

Northern section:
You need all of the keys or you can forget it. First,
take the path to the west, go through the door and follow
the hallway all the way to its end. Lower the bars and
throw the switch at the end of the room. Now, go back
outside and take the passage to the north. Follow the
hallway to the end, and repeat the above process. Go back
out and enter the room to the east. Open the yellow-keyed
door and do the same thing again. Now, follow the hallway
back out to the room with the alter. The bars to the north
should be lowered and you can enter the hallway and throw
the switch in the alcove. The wall in front of you will
lower. Proceed forward and repeat the process. The next
wall will lower. Move forward again and lower the final
barrier. Continue to the north and around the corner till
you get to the switch marked "Proceed to exit." Throw the
switch and head back to the center of the level where you
originally warped in. The exit will now be exposed.

NOTE: There is a room to the west with teleporters
configured like a compass. It has no real practical
application in single player mode. However it may be used
in deathmatch to double back on your opponents.

                           Level 6

Q) Are you out of your mind? There are EIGHT Cyberdemons
in the central courtyard!!!!! This level is
unbeatable!!!!!!!!!

A) Ya big old chicken! This is Doom, not Disney! Show a
little backbone, will ya! Look, it's simple really. The
Cyberdemons cannot follow you through the passages to the
north and the west...they're too tall. The idea is to know
when to run, and when to fight. When you throw the switch
that the Archviles were guarding, turn around and RUN
through the hallway to the west. Go find the red key. When
you come back out into the hallway you'll see an
invincibility globe. This is not for FIGHTING with! Grab
it, then run past the Cyberdemons (this may be difficult in
itself!) and into the hallway to the north. Fight past the
Cacodemons and into the room with the Mancubus. Did you
kill everything there? Are you stuck there now? How about
a little target practice! When you get the barriers raised,
head through the door to the west.
After killing the Cacodemons, proceed past the red-
keyed door. Kill whatever moves before it kills you. Throw
the switch in the nukage that builds the stairs. Take the
stairs up and throw the next switch. Go back the way you
came and throw the switch in the central room where you just
killed the Cacodemons. Now you can go back out to where the
Mancubus was and take the passage to the east.
Work your way through the hallways and up the stairs
and down to the lower level. Get outside and climb the
metal towers. Drop down inside the tallest tower and
retrieve the blue key. Now work your way back the way you
came till you get to the main hallway again. Oooh, looky,
another invincibility globe. Grab it and run back out into
the midst of the Cyberdemons.
Now, take the western hallway again. Open the blue-
keyed door and go inside and kill everything. Walk into the
center circle and step on the pad that lowers the columns.
The lighted circles will teleport you inside the outer,
large columns. Each column has a switch that will lower the
platform to the floor momentarily, letting you out. ONE
column has two switches. Find that column and throw the
other switch. When you get back down to the ground there
will be a new switch at the front of the room. Throw the
switch and fight off the barons (if you're running low on
health you can bait them into walking across the transporter
circles, thus trapping them inside of the columns. You can
then even transport in on top of them and frag them.). Now
go find the yellow key. Trust me, it's there, you just need
to look hard for it. Grab the key and the invincibility
globe and RUN back out through the hallway, past the
Cyberdemons and into the southern hallway. Open the yellow-
keyed door and run into the main arena.
In the main arena be careful not to make any noise
right off the bat or you'll find yourself in deep trouble.
Jump down into the pit and take the curving stairway up into
the central building. Make your way to the upper level and
throw the switch at the top. Wow, is that a Spider
Mastermind you hear? NO! It's SIX Spider
Masterminds!!!!!!!!
Okay, now you think it's impossible, but trust me, you
can do this. Go back downstairs and into the room that's
now open. Work your way to the back and hit the switch
there. That switch exposes a teleporter inside the
southeastern brick column outside. It will enable you to
escape the central building. But don't go outside yet! Do
you hear a lot of fighting? Have the Cyberdemons shown up
yet? If not, hide inside for a while. If you want to risk
it, take a peek out the window. Look at that! The
Cyberdemons and the Spiders are fighting each other! And
they'll keep at it till until one of them wins (my bet is on
the Cyberdemons). When you feel the time is right, jump out
a window and go find the teleporter. It will take you to a
hallway to the west of the arena. Turn around and head up
the hallway. When you get to the top, you need to run and
jump off the ledge onto the next walkway. There will be a
passage directly to your right when you land. Hurry into it
and make your way back to a stone room with some trees in
the center. Go to the back of the room and throw a switch.
There's also a lot of ammo around the corner for you. Now
grab the invincibility globe and head back outside. You'll
find that the switch you threw built a set of stairs leading
up to a barred passage. If you lucked out you'll have
trapped some Cyberdemons and/or Spiders on the stairs.
There are plenty of invincibility globes outside for you, so
you should easily be able to find your way to the hallway to
the northeast of the arena. Head up the hallway and again
jump across to the ledge. Take the hallway to the left and
go back into the stone room. This time you'll be on the
opposite side of the room. Go throw the switch, grab the
invincibility globe, and head back outside. The bars at the
top of the stairs will now be lowered. If you want, you can
try to kill the remaining enemies, or you can head up the
stairs to the exit. And that's it, the episode is done! I
hope you enjoyed it, and I'd love to hear any comments you
might have.

NOTE: If you are still skeptical about level six being
beatable, let me just tell you that one of my testers beat
it starting out with ONLY a pistol. So it is definitely
possible to win.
