Doom WAD file reviews

Give me the finger for the newest review list. I'll try to update it about
once a week.

130 WADs reviewed and counting

Note:
All files were run on a 486/66

These reviews are the opinion of one person - me. If I don't like your
WAD, I'm sorry, but don't waste your time sending me hate mail. I do this
as a service mainly for my users and for anyone else in the Doom community
who doesn't want to sort through the growing number of WADs.

All the WADs were reviewed only for single player mode.

All these WADs (plus hundreds more) can be found at

Yet another DOOM level....

11BONES.WAD

Created with DEU 5.0 and BSP 1.0.

FEATURES:
   - A completely new level.
   - Deathmatch ready. (Each warp in spot has a weapon)
   - Varying skill levels enabled.
   - All the textures match.

This pwad is meant to be used as one of the lower levels. Some
other levels feature 10 Barons/room, not so here.

Feel free to include it in an episode compilation.

Have fun...

The layout is well done and as he said, it's one of the lower levels - not
much challenge here. The only problem is I'm not sure if it's finished. I
could not find a way to get into one room and also could not access the
exit.

Base : New level from scratch
Build Time : hours, days, weeks, months (a long time)
Editor(s) used : DEU and BSP, until they failed. There seems to be a
                          limit to the size of the level. BSP11X did not help,
                          and I've had to scale this level back. IDBSP seemed
                          to hang every time I tried it.
Known Bugs : One texture goes dark when you get close. Everything
                          else seems to work properly. There's a lot of stuff
                          so you'll need a fast machine (486 minimum).

This level started off rough - almost too rough when the Barons came out of
nowhere, but I kept going - and wasted my precious time. Even after the
Cyberdemon came out (maybe I can throw my empty plasma gun at it?), I kept
playing with the cheat. Even that was a waste of time when I couldn't find
any more switches to get to the rest of the level. A complete waste of
time.

HEY! It's an original level. Thanks to DEU5 beta4.

This is reminicent of a castle with moat and all. There still a few
problems. Some of the walls are paper thin, which should NOT be done
(I wish I'd known that earlier). Bitmaps don't all line up either.

Please be kind, this is my first original level.

A small level, nicely done but very short and easy. An extreme amount of
weapons for just a few monsters. Probably better as a deathmatch level.

Abyss - a pwad for your enjoyment by Avery Lodato.

This wad replaces E1M1.

A few notes:
  1) I think that I got most of the bugs out of this level, but there
are still a few problems that I can't track down.
    a>at the very begining of the level if you stand on the border
between the first couple of sectors, the screen will somtimes
insert a black frame or two.
    b>the star room with the blue keycard has caused my computer to
crash on two occasions. there is a lot going on in this room, but
I still don't understand exactly what is causing the problem. (I think
that i was using the iddqd cheat both times)

  2) This is a hard level, but I know that it's not impossible
because I finished it myself (with no cheats, but repeated saves)

  3) I had plans for much more, but I am sick of working on this level.
I don't think that I'll do another level until the next generation of
level editors is released, it can be a frustrating experience to know
that what you want to do _should_ be possible but can't be made to work.

This level was made using DEU 5.0 and BSP 1.0 -
Thanks to everyone working on DOOM utilites for making this possible!

Excellent level! Very challenging. It took me quite a few times to figure

Pretty good level. The layout is very large with good use of switches -
making you go back and forth throughout the level. The only thing keeping
it from begin a must-have is a slight inconsistency in the difficulty. It
will be fairly easy for a while and then you will get jumped by a number of
large creatures.

What's the difference between v1.0 and v1.01? Hell if I know - but if one
more moron uploads v1.0 to my BBS, I'll frag em myself! (SKI eats a
Hershey bar to relax and then continues)

This is fear. True, absolute, mutha-f**kin fear. A demon running at you
may make you a little nervous. A full sized Alien running at you makes you
piss in your pants. I can't praise the graphics in this package enough.
The replacements for the Demon are incredible and the Lost Souls
replacements are shaded so well, they look better than any of the original
Doom creatures. And the levels? Incredible. Done exactly in the original
Doom style. They aren't these huge, 60 minutes levels (not that there's
anything wrong with those) and they don't have goofy "hidden" things. A
few times, I found myself jumping into lava pits to see if something was
hidden down there (like in so many other PWADs). All I got for my troubles
was a burned bottom. The only part I didn't like about this was the
replacement sounds (but I've never liked any replacement sounds as much as
the originals). But they did do something smart - the sounds are in a
separate WAD so you don't have to load them. I hope all WAD makers who
include sounds from now on follow this example. An absolute must-have.

                        little of everything a new DEU user would need to

                        textures, steps, lifts and more. It's meant to
                        replace Episode 1, Map 1, so there ain't no
                        Cacodemons, rocket launchers or instant death traps,
                        if you're into that stuff you'll need to wait for

This is another homemade DOOM level, created using DEU 5.0. Enjoy!
(I ran the PWAD through Colin Reed's node-builder 1.0, and it actually
cleared out all ugly small "hall of mirrors" bugs... Nice!)

I should give this WAD more time, but I think it would be a waste. First,
you have to make this jump right in the beginning of the game or you miss
the chaingun. Then, a few minutes later, a Cyberdemon appears and I
thought "Oh. One of THOSE kinds of levels.", but that part was actually
pretty clever. The Cyberdemon is trapped and kills a bunch of Cacodemons.
So I kept going. Most of the level is dark - too dark. Then, after a
while, I was jumped by a Baron (or 2 or 3? hard to tell) and I gave this
one the thumbs down.

Yowza! First rate! You start off with the automap just to get an idea of
the long journey to come. This is definately not a WAD you will finish on
the first try. The use of keys/doors and sealing off areas to make you
backtrack to a new area is excellent.

An entire episode although it would be generous to call it nine "complete"
levels. L1 & L2 were good and challenging which kept me going through L3
which was almost TOO hard although some of it was just crap - the floor
suddenly lowering and six sarges all taking shots at you at once. L9 (the
fourth level)is one of the most visually astounding levels I've ever seen.
It has huge height differences with a main staircase that goes across the
entire level. So now I'm thinking the problems with 3 were just a fluke,
but nope - I completely skipped level 4 because I thought it was crap.
Heavy darkness - creatures above you that you can't see most of the time.
L5 and L6 were quite good. Then I guess they were out of ideas and wanted
to release it anyway. After the complexity of a level like L9, L7 and L8
looked like about 30 minutes of work a piece. A huge armoury, two Spiders
and lots of room to avoid them in 7 and then a Cyber in 8. After the
arming up in L7 and the additional plasma available in 8, the Cyber was
easy. This episode is good, but it could have been great.

Somebody requested a deathmatch arena of huge proportions with a
catwalk. Well this is a close as I could get. This is huge!

Each player starts (deathmatch or cooperative) in a hall at each
of the four corners. Every weapon is present and a ton of monsters.
Since this was designed specifically to be a deathmatch game, there
is no exit.

To run type:

doom -file arena.wad

If you don't want any of the monsters type:

doom -file arean.wad -nomonsters

This is a self-extracting archive called arena.exe. It contains this
text file and the wad file.

This pwad was built with Deu 5.0 and bsp 1.0.

Tony Hayes

PS There is some oddness in one corner that makes walls appear that
don't exist. This happens when Deu and/or BSP are run on the file.
I don't know why, if some one can tell me I'd be greatful. I'm
wondering if the level is too big?

Like he said - HUGE! Just an open area with a catwalk around it and all

                        Some of the traps in the level prevent it from

                     Designed by Steve Taylor

******************************************************************

Atrium.wad is a fairly short DOOM level (completion times on
the order of 5 to 10 minutes). The level is stored as E1M1. In
particular, it contains a barrel puzzle which I think you may find
quite challenging. You'll know what part I mean when you get to
it. The rest of the level involves some tricky monster
confrontations. It is not set up for multi-player currently.

The "atrium" part of the level involves lots of tree decorations
and may slow down the game unacceptably on anything but a fast 486.
If you're having problems just cheat to get past it.

The level was designed with DEU 5.0. Congrats to the authors for
a great piece of public domain programming.

Sneaky barrel puzzle?? Hell, I just blew em away with my shotgun - only
took about 45% damage. But then I needed some more health so I tried again
- used to pistol to shoot at one barrel - after each shot, the barrel moved
further away. As soon as the first one blew, I ran after it so the last
ones wouldn't hit me. Only took about 10% that time. The 'puzzle' is
interesting but not enough where I would take the time to e-mail him about
it. Besides that, the level is pretty nice. Short, and around medium
difficulty.

                          some styles from my favorites. It is
                          a somewhat difficult level, no great
                          puzzles or brainteasers, just a fun

 DOOM ADD-ON MAPS / BARONS1 & 2
--------------------------------
Here are 2 very small DOOM - MAPS (E1M1 and E1M2), designed to test
your skill.
The aim is not to reach the exit, which would be very simple,
but - of course - to kill all barons.

We use these maps as kinda entrance examination for deathmatch game.

BARONS1.WAD: A very large place with 8 Barons and a lot of room to side-step,
             so it should not be too difficult.
             You can gather about 10 rockets more than you really need.
BARONS2.WAD: A much smaller room with lots of Barons and plenty of rockets.

For those who don't believe that it's possible, I've included a demo.
PLAY1.BAT - for BARONS1.WAD
PLAY2.BAT - for BARONS2.WAD

Thanks to the people if ID for making DOOM
and to the fantastic DEU 5.0.

*BIGBRO.WAD*

---------------------------

Introduction to BigBro.wad
----------------------------------------------------------

  This pwad was based on the Big Brother theme; when you're
walking around, you'll always remember that _Big_Brother_is_
watching_you_. The big brother will be informed in his 'workroom'
about the other players' whereabouts with the help of secret lines.
Those lines indicate the position of the other players. This
knowledge is of great help when being in DEATHMATCH mode. This
idea is implemented by a series of nasty secrets; it is intended
for multi-player, with only one player knowing the way to what
we call the "Big Brother Area" (ok, sounds stupid, but who cares).
If you don't know the place: it's still playable, although it might
be a bit too large; you don't meet the other player too often.
If however you aren't able to find the area described, feel free to
mail 1 of us for more details.

  If you can only play one-player: it's a challenge as well.
This is a level where you really have to watch your ammo, I
know a lot of you guys don't like those situations, but then
again: don't play it if you hate it. In 1-player mode you don't
have to worry about the big brother area because it doesnt count
as secret and there are no items/monsters.

This PWAD was designed for basic combat training in DOOM. It covers
all the essentials. Marksmanship, hand to hand combat and agility.
PLUS blowing up the barrels is a BLAST! There is NO exit.
Push any of the walls for a fresh supply of barrels, ammo and weapons
(You advance to the next level but the map is the same as the previous
level [E1M1-8, E2M1-9]).

Oh boy, how about a big room with lots of barrels. And then lets put 3 or
4 monsters in the room too. There, you just witnessed the entire thought
process of this level. Except it's repeated 18 times. Pass, pass, pass.

Imagine that you walk up to a castle. It's big, and very dark.
You look up. Somebody is shooting at you from the turrets!
Better start moving, or you'll never escape. You run around
the outside. The castle is surrounded by a moat, and there's
no back door. Just a small window high up on one wall. Darn,
you'll have to go in the front door.

I built this level from scratch using BEU5.0 and BSP11X. It is
the biggest, most complex level that I've ever seen. Well over
a thousand vertices and linedefs. Lot's of tricky bits, pretty
scenery, and violence. I would appreciate seeing an LMP for
a triple 100% on ultraviolent.

This level replaces episode 1, map 1. It allows multi-player and
deathmatch games. It's tuned for single player.

When I first read "most complex level that I've ever seen", I thought yeah,
right. But it's no lie. This is one of the BEST levels I've ever seen.
It took me about a dozen tries to figure it out, and my time for my first
successful run was 47 minutes! Huge, huge level, plenty of blood, and even
some warring Cacodemons and Barons of Hell just for fun. An absolute
must-have level.

This is somewhere between good and ok. I got killed once or twice before I
finally got through it. There are a good numbers of creatures from
soldiers to Barons, but you get SOOOO much ammo along the way, I kept
thinking, "Wow, there must be a LOT of creatures behind that last door."
But no, it was just an exit. Good buildup, then nothing. But still better
than average for a 5-10 ride.

Not much info in the text file - not much entertainment in the WAD. Both
levels are extremely easy, with a lot of things jumping out at you but
always in small numbers and you have PLENTY of ammo. Although this isn't
something I usually pay much attention too, I did like the style of the 1st
WAD. Some good use of black walls and bright lights. At one point I
picked up a Light Amp and there was little effect because of the black
floors and ceiling. This is a much better effect than darkness - but the
WADs are still dull.  Pass.

Welcome to the CourtYard,

REPLACES Episode 3 Mission 1

        Now for nitty gritty. This level is extrememly difficult for myself,
and I consider myself a *very* experience Doom player. Included with the
level is an LMP (demo) demonstrating the quickest routes to completing the
level. I had to re-record *many* times because I exceeded the 15 minute
recording limit. Also, I got nuked several times when attempting to cut
corners and bypass some of the trouble; it didn't work :) Anyhow, if you
get stuck (say you can't find one of the keys), watch the LMP, it should
clarify any confusion that may abound.

        DESCRIPTION:  CORTYR_B.ZIP

        Yes! There is a central CourtYard for you pleasure. Also, through-
out the level you will find a power reactor, power conduits, big, big,
lights, a lamppost, a huge pit, jail bars, secret elevators, and some very
idle barons awaiting your company :) This level has been tested deathmatch,
and, believe it or not, I got my butt fragged even though I designed the
level! I admit that there are not enough linkages to fully enjoy DeathMatch,
but, I hope someone else will test out the level and see how it works for
them.

        May the force be with you! (I have kept the STAR WARS sound patch
on, even for the recorded demo :) Definately worth the meggage on my hard
drive.

        'tis all, now go out and die :)

    ---- Daemon Version 2 Level ---
    "And you thought Imps were bad"

This is version 2.0 of deamon.wad. It's a standard level
with a deathmatch component. I haven't tried it in
deathmatch (yet).

This version fixes the hall-of-mirrors effects (which were my
fault due to my construction and mode-type for the doors :)
It also includes several more rooms and traps, plus more
"murder holes" for deathmatch.

Deamon2's got some nasty traps - so watch out! >:-)

If you like levels with puzzles and nifty effects, then Daemon 2
is for you!

Except for texture and alignment, please email me about bugs you
find. I'd also like to know what you think of it!

Thanks to the authors of DEU 5.0 and BSP 1.0.
This wad was created using DEU 5.0 (non-beta) and running the
output through BSP.

Have fun!

Nasty traps is right. Oops, don't open that door, there's a Baron in

Nothing too exciting here. This WAD could use a lot more creatures - (I
finished the level with 100 shells, 200+ chaingun rounds, and enough plasma
for an army of imps), and a few less "surprises" - boing, crushing
ceilings, oops, that's an unmarked acid spot, etc. Well made, just not
very interesting.

Description:
the setting is open-field/city-like, bright light, many buildings,
high demand of processing power.

This is my first attempt at creating WAD files for DOOM.
The creation of this WAD was made possible by the two great programs
called DEU 5.1 and BSP 1.1.
In this WAD I made my attempt at the creation of multi-floor buildings
using teleporters along staircases. The only 'true' teleporter is the
one in the beginning, all subsequent teleport effects should be ignored
(if you don't look at the map too often the illusion of multi-floor
is better....) The jammed door that you will find helps creating the
effect of two separate floors.
I also tried to concentrate in creating a realistic (and also playable)
lighting conditions, I wanted to have buildings cast shadows, but that
would require more hours of sector hacking and many more 2-sided LineDefs
which would slow down the game a lot, so I dropped the idea.
As for the difficulty, this is an average level, the experienced player
will have no problem to complete it.

Additional Credits to : Ben Jos Walbeehm for testing the level and
			  for corrections to the English text,

This is a good WAD. It might even be a great WAD but there are a number of
bugs in the level. A minor thing like a messed-up wall is no big deal, but
when creatures from another room fire through the wall to hit me, then I've
got a problem. But it is still quite playable and pretty good.

This level was made using DEU5BET4 and DEU50 (the best level editors I
have seen. I highly recommend DEU). It replaces Episode 2, Mission 1,
as per ID's request that no new levels be made for Episode 1. It is
completely new, not a hack of an existing level. This is my first Doom
level, but I think it is very good. There are some tricky parts, and if
you are ever tempted to think it is unfinishable, you can watch the demo
I have provided. Thanks to Justin Mansell for help using the DEU editor

When I saw the "Watch out for the Cyberdemons", I figured it would be
dumb...so I played it! The beginning was actually quite good - one of
those rooms where its you and about 50 other creatures and you don't even
have time to think about your next move. But after that, it was pretty dry
even at the end when 5 Cyberdemons jump you and you have to run away to the
exit.  Pass.

leave.

        DMPITS.BAT (STARTS PLAY)
        DMPITS.WAD (MODIFIED DOOM DATA FILE)

COPY DMPITS.BAT AND DMPITS.WAD INTO YOUR DOOM DIRECTORY. TYPE "DMPITS" TO
START PLAY. THERE IS NO SKILL LEVEL CHOICE - THEY'RE ALL THE SAME DIFFICULTY.

THIS PATCH FILE WILL NOT WORK IN THE SHAREWARE VERSION OF DOOM.

SPECIAL REQUEST
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
THIS MODIFIED LEVEL IS THE RESULT OF 35+ HOURS OF EDITING AND TESTING. I HAVE
DONE MY BEST TO MAKE THIS LEVEL TOUGH YET "DOABLE."  I SURE HOPE YOU GIVE
IT A FEW TRYS WITHOUT USING THE CHEAT KEYS. SAVING FREQUENTLY IS NOT A BAD
IDEA UNTIL YOU FIGURE OUT THE "TRICKS" OF THE FACILITY, BUT USING "GOD MODE"
WILL REALLY TAKE THE FUN OF THE MODIFICATIONS. I'M SURE MOST OF YOU WON'T
HAVE ANY PROBLEMS AT ALL.
I DESIGNED THIS LEVEL WITH A VERY SPECIFIC MOVEMENT AND WEAPON SELECTION
STRATEGY. IF YOU FIND YOURSELF SAYING "THERE'S NO WAY ANYONE COULD BE FAST
ENOUGH TO SURVIVE THIS," THEN STEP BACK AND REEVALUATE YOUR APPROACH. DON'T
GIVE INTO THOSE CHEAT KEYS. ONCE YOU DISCOVER THE METHOD TO MY MADNESS YOU'LL
ONLY HAVE TO DEAL WITH THE RANDOM VARIABLES AND LOSING YOUR GRIP ON THE MOUSE
OR JOYSTICK <G>.  OF COURSE THERE ARE MANY AREAS WHERE YOU HAVE A WIDE
SELECTION OF TACTICAL CHOICES, AND WHAT YOU DECIDE HERE WILL DETERMINE WHETHER
WALK OR CRAWL TO THE EXIT DOOR, OR END UP WITH CRITTERS DOING A JIG AROUND
YOUR CORPSE.
ON AVERAGE, IT TAKES ME 35 MINUTES TO COMPLETE THIS LEVEL. AND DESPITE MY
KNOWING EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS LEVEL, I STILL GET UP FROM MY COMPUTER SHAKING.
I HOPE YOU HAVE AS MUCH FUN!
SINCE I REALLY ENJOYED DOING THIS AND WILL BE DOING MORE, I WOULD APPRECIATE
ANY COMMENTS, CRITICISMS, OR SUGGESTIONS.  AND ALTHOUGH I DOUBT ANYONE WILL
NEED THEM, I WON'T MIND OFFERING SELECT "SUGGESTIONS" AND APPROACHES TO
SOLVING THIS LEVEL.
One of the best!!  I think that this is THE MOST violent WAD there is.  I'm
sure there is some utility that could give me an exact number of the
creatures in this WAD, but I don't have it.  I just know you kill, kill,
kill and kill some more.  A room that is empty when you leave it will be
full again the next time you pass through 10 minutes later.  This is a
large, difficult and (did I mention?) very populated WAD.  For absolute
Doom purists, yes, he did rip off a small section of the level from the
original Doom, but also added some new features to it.  It's still a highly
original WAD.
EVERWHERE YOU TURN, SOMEONE OR SOMETHING IS TRYING TO STOP YOU. TO KILL YOU.
SHOULDN'T BE WANDERING AROUND THEIR FACILITY PUSHING BUTTONS.  MAYBE THEY'RE
DOOM "PORTAL"
~~~~~~~~~~~~
DMPRTL.ZIP CONTAINS THE FOLLOWING FILES:

        DMPRTL.TXT (YOU'RE READING IT)
        DMPRTL.WAD (MODIFIED DOOM DATA FILE)

INSTALLATION
~~~~~~~~~~~~
COPY DMPRTL.WAD INTO YOUR DOOM DIRECTORY. WHEN IN YOUR DOOM DIRECTORY TYPE
"DOOM -DEVPARM -FILE DMPRTL.WAD -WARP 1 2 -SKILL 4 (OR 1 IF YOU WANT TO PLAY
IT EASY) TO START PLAY. OR USE BLACKFIST'S EXCELLENT WADRUNNER PROGRAM.
(IN CASE YOU'RE WONDERING WHY I DID NOT MAKE LOADING EASIER BY USING THE
FIRST LEVEL IN ONE OF THE EPISODES, IT'S BECAUSE THE E1M2 MUSIC BEST SUITS
THE MOOD OF MY LEVEL, IMHO)
THERE ARE 2 SKILL LEVEL CHOICES - EASY (I'M TOO YOUNG TO DIE) AND HARD (ULTRA
VIOLENCE). THE LEVEL WAS DESIGNED TO BE PLAYED ON HARD. EASY WAS KIND OF AN
AFTERTHOUGHT, AND SEEMS WAY TOO EASY FOR ME. BUT THEN I KNOW WHERE EVERTHING
IS TOO.  FOR THOSE WITH SLOWER MACHINES WHO DON'T ENJOY VIEWING THE WORLD
THROUGH A POSTAGE STAMP SIZED WINDOW, EASY MIGHT HELP IMPROVE THE FRAME RATE.
(BECAUSE THERE'S FEWER MONSTERS)
IF YOU DO NOT COMPLETE DOOM "PORTAL" IN ONE SITTING AND SAVE THE GAME, BE SURE
TO USE THE "-FILE DMPRTL.WAD" COMMAND TO UPDATE THE GAME OR YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO
ACCESS YOUR SAVEGAME FILE.
ENTRY POINTS FOR COOPERATIVE AND DEATHMATCH GAMES HAVE BEEN PROVIDED BUT NOT
TESTED. DEATHMATCH START POINTS ARE IN RELATIVILY "QUIET" AREAS.
DOOM "PORTAL" WILL NOT WORK WITH NON-REGISTERED VERSIONS OF DOOM.
IMPORTANT GAME PLAY NOTES
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
SUPPLY MANAGEMENT IS VERY IMPORTANT IN DOOM "PORTAL."
DO *NOT* PICK UP AMMO, MEDIKITS, ARMOR, ETC JUST BECAUSE THEY'RE THERE. YOU
MUST DETERMINE WHETHER OR NOT YOU REALLY NEED THESE ITEMS AT THIS PARTICULAR
POINT IN RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR ABILITY TO CARRY THEM AND ESTIMATED FUTURE
NEEDS. DOOM PORTAL IS A LEVEL OF EVER-INCREASING VIOLENCE WITH A DECREASING
AMOUNT OF RESOURCES AVAILABLE.

FOR EXAMPLE, IF YOU HAVE A RUCKSACK AND 385 ROUNDS OF AMMO, DON'T PICK UP
A 50 ROUND BOX OF BULLETS - YOUR LOSING 35 ROUNDS YOU'LL WISH YOU HAD LATER.
DON'T USE A SOUL SPHERE IF YOUR HEALTH ISN'T BELOW 100%. DON'T USE A SHOTGUN
IF YOUR FISTS WILL DO THE JOB.

AT SOME POINT YOU MIGHT BE ASKING, WHAT'S NEXT? WELL, AT THAT POINT BEFORE
CONTINUING, BE SURE TO SCROUNGE UP EVERY LAST BIT OF AMMO, ARMOR, ETC.
BE SURE YOUR GAS TANK IS FULL AND YOUR KNUCKLES ARE PRIMED.

ABOUT 1/3 OF THE LEVEL HAS GREAT DEAL OF "RANDOMNESS." IS THIS BY DESIGN AND
IS HEAVILY INFLUENCED BY YOUR CHOICE OF TACTICAL METHODS. TRY VARIOUS
APPROACHES AND SEE THE DIFFERENCE. THIS FEATURE HAS MADE MY REPETITIOUS
TESTING OF THE LEVEL MUCH MORE "INTERESTING."

ON AVERAGE, DOOM "PORTAL" TAKES 45 MINUTES TO COMPLETE. I USUALLY FINISH WITH
NO AMMO, NO ARMOR, AND 85-127% HEALTH. (THIS IS ON "HARD") I'M SURE YOU CAN
DO BETTER THAN THIS OLD MAN.

PROBLEMS
~~~~~~~~
FRAME RATE DROPS AT A FEW SWITCH LOCATIONS. THIS CLEARS ITSELF IN A FEW
SECONDS.  FRAME RATE ALSO DROPS ONCE WHEN A SITUATION GETS "BUSY," BUT ONLY
LASTS A MINUTE OR TWO ONCE CERTAIN OBJECTIVES HAVE BEEN MET.  UNLIKE DOOM
"PITS" THERE SEEM TO BE NO SAVEGAME PROBLEMS.
WARNING
~~~~~~~
USE OF THESE FILES IS AT YOUR OWN RISK. I ASSUME NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR
ANYTHING THAT MIGHT HAPPEN WHEN YOU USE THEM.

Another first class job by Nicholas Bell! It's non-stop violence like
Pits, his first one, but this time you must WATCH YOUR AMMO. Somewhere
there is a chainsaw, rocket launcher, and plasma gun (thanks to SHOWMAP),
but unfortunately, I never found them and got my ass plastered in the
"second part" of this level. (So I cheated and finished ;) ) Once again, a

Description : This level is a downsized version of an extremely
                          large level I created which would not save due to
                          "savegame buffer overrun." This level has been
                          tested on 3 different systems and exhibits no such
                          problem.

                          Pay attention to wall textures and check your map
                          once in a while. Remember the one really bad monster
                          is EXTREMELY easy to kill, once you know how. There's
                          no need to cheat, 'cause I hate him too. Note the
                          multiple bezerk boxes are simply a way of me giving the
                          player 100% health without using multiple medikits.
                          Too many useable things is the key reason some levels
                          wouldn't save (although the number of sectors also
                          seems to have a negative effect). Thus my reason for
                          cutting down on the number of medikits by using single
                          bezerk kits.

This is a large level but I only played it for a few minutes. Make one
move, something jumps out from behind you, another move, the ceiling
crushes you, another, etc. Loads of traps = a load of crap.

One of the Laura Beyer demos. This one sucks. It's a huge WAD file
because a lot of sounds are replaced (I always thought sound replacement
files were stupid - no exception here) The level itself is large but not
good at all.

Misc. Author Info : I tried to stay with the Sepultura theme of WAD

                          Me, they did their own version of it, which is
                          kinda cool. Unfortunately, this WAD has nothing
                          to do with drugs or me :) Hope you like it anyway.
                          I really hate DEU. During the construction of this
                          WAD, I managed to crash it a record (for me) 21
                          times. I finally had to get DoomCAD to repair the
                          mistakes left by DEU. Whenever I tried to delete
                          a single wall with DEU, the entire level would
                          crash and change almost all the walls to "DO NOT
                          USE" or something like that. If anyone knows the
                          cause of this or has any suggestions/solutions, I
                          would greatly appreciate some e-mail. Thanks.

Description : A rather large level. I had it up past 300K, but
                          had to "trim" once Doom started crashing. Features
                          many areas designed for multiplayer (deathmatch
                          or co-op), including windows and some sniping
                          spots. Can be played completely with single player,

I recommend this level more for the layout than the gameplay. The level is
very well done with lots of huge staircases, but the action is a little
weak. There is a Spider and a Cyber in the last huge area, but all the
monsters except the Cyber are 'deaf' (they won't attack you) and the Cyber
is trapped, making it much too easy.

Well, here it is, my first totally new level! For lack of a better name
(actually, you'll see where I derived the name from at the beginning of
the level), ELEVATOR.WAD is a "stock" Doom PWAD that continues the basic
theme/layout seen in Episode 1. This level was not designed as a complete
blastfest or a extra-difficult puzzle-type level, but it does have some
interesting obstacles and a few nasty traps. The level is average in
size (55K) which means that it will run fast and you don't have to worry
about a lot of slowdown that you see in the bigger levels.

This level was originally designed for network play, but is also ideal
for single player games. The level is "professionally" done, wall/ceiling
and switch textures match fairly well and are consistent.

A good WAD is hard. A bad WAD is impossible. This WAD is somewhere in
between those two - I may have been able to get past the beginning with
some more trys, but I doubt it would have been worth it. Besides that,
there are a few bugs in here - some textures "disappeared" the first time I
played it. If you think most WADs are for wimps, this may be for you. I'm
not going to play it again.

Genius? Yeah, on America Online...RIGHT! ;) His AOL handle of Dippy
becomes apparent as soon as you play this. You get your standard 50
bullets and 8 shotgun shells to kill about 30 spectres. I guess the
strategy is to run to the door. After this, I think we need some kind of
scanner that keeps AOL files off the Internet. I don't like "Dippys" files
getting mixed in with real WAD files. If you still haven't figured it out,

Fear21 has been well tested in both multiplayer and single modes,and if

This level was designed to be exciting and challenging for advanced players

           DO IT RIGHT, OR YOUR FUTURE AIN'T TO BRIGHT!

    This level CAN be done! I'm not the best DOOM player in the
  world, nor am I too great, but if I can do this, YOU can too!

    There are lots of doors to choose from. If you open the right
    doors at the right time, you'll do alright. Open the wrong
    one(s) at the wrong time, you're gonna' support room and
    board for worms!

    UNLIKE MOST HOME MADE LEVELS, Selecting the level of
    difficulty WILL change the ammount (and types) of enemies you
    face, so anyone can do this!

    IT SEEMS I went a little easy on you in a few rooms, doesn't
    it? Well, if you play ULTRA VIOLENCE or NIGHTMARE, you're
    in for a RUDE AWAKENING!

    There are two soul spheres and invulnerability spheres. In
    the ULTRA VIOLENCE and NIGHTMARE difficulty levels, use
    them sparingly, because you have a mother of a fight near the
    exit!!! Otherwise, it won't be too tough!

Another good WAD ruined (maybe?) by CyberDemons. The WAD is not nearly as
nasty the description says. There is plenty of ammo. There is a pitch
black area, but with a light visor nearby, that's not too tough either.
The problem is at the end, there are TWO CyberDemons in two rooms. The
strategy being:pick up the invulnerable sphere and blast em with your BFG.
That's just throwing Cybers in for no reason. I suppose if you did use the
BFG, if would be fairly easy (I tried to blast em with rockets and ran out
of time), but it just seems to be a bogus ending to a fairly good WAD. So
the bottom line is - good WAD, crappy (maybe) ending. That evens out to
'nothing great' in my book.

flash.wad

A WAD file for DOOM 1.2 [reg]
Author: J.D. Frazer
Internet: a481@mindlink.bc.ca

This is my first attempt at a big WAD file. I used mine1.wad as the basis
for the map, changed a few linedefs and added a big section onto it. It's
totally populated, and the four difficulty levels are active. It's also
been set up for cooperative gaming. The level is ideal for deathmatches, as
there are lots of rooms and windows and nooks and crannies to hide out in
(good for a three on one!), but it might be a little hairy at the
ultraviolence level. I've spent three days testing the hell out of it, so
it should be bulletproof. As far as I know you won't get a single "hall of
mirrors" effect anywhere on the map.

The only glitch I've come across is the secrets tally. There *is* a secret
room on this level, but if you find it the end-tally still shows 0%. If you
know how to fix this, drop me a line.

I'm currently working on a truly massive and intricate level, but I'm also
putting together a small one here and there. If you enjoy flash.wad, please
send me email and tell me what you like about it. If there's something you
*don't* like, tell me that too.

Happy Fragging!

*FLORZOO1.WAD*

---------------------------
Text included with WAD file

    === FLORZOO1.WAD === for E1M1 ===

    This level started out as a way to view all the textures in situ, as it
were. The east side of the map has all the floor/ceiling textures (they're
both the same), in ten rows of ten, plus an 11th row of a few stragglers. The
rugs, as I like to call 'em, are in alphabetical order as listed in the DEU
select box, left to right, top to bottom. Some of the rugs look the same, like
the Blood, Water, and Lava textures. All texture samples are 256 X 256 units.

    After I made the floor textures, I decided what we needed was a Zoo, so
as to be able to view the monsters in a relaxed fashion. The Zoo is in the
upper west side of the map. Please observe the Zoo Visitors rules that follow.

    Next, we needed a Weapons Display gallery, so as to admire all the fun
toys. Down at the bottom of the Rug Room, a door will lead you to the display.
Please do not touch the displays. Thank you.

    Also down that hall is the Thing Room, with all the non-bonus Things on
display. They are lined up by category, in the same order as in DEU:

        Decorations
        Decorations -- light sources
        Decorations -- dead bodies
        Decorations -- hanging bodies

    Lastly, the Wall Textures. Sorry, no wall textures. I count about 280
separate wall textures in this game -- I don't know when I will be able to
make (a) room for them all. I'm uploading this file now, or you might never
see any of it. Eventually I'll get it done. That's why I numbered this file
FLORZOO1. #2 is under construction.

    By now, you're probably thinking "Gee, it'd be nice to kill all those
monsters". Naturally. Please read the following...

  ==========================================================================
                            ZOO VISITATION RULES
  ==========================================================================

    If you want to look at the rugs and admire the monkeys, fine. Just observe
    a few of the Zoo Rules:

    1) Do not feed the beasts.

    2) Do not approach the cages.

    3) Remember to duck.

    4) Loud noises upset the beasts. Please be quiet.

    5) Please do not touch the Weapons display.

    6) Please do not climb on the furniture.

    7) Discharge of Energy weapons anywhere inside the Facility is strictly
       prohibited.

    8) Above all, do NOT enter the restricted areas. Restricted areas are not
       to be entered except by authorized Zoo personnel. The Zoo will not be
       responsible for any injury to a Visitor if this rule is not observed.

                                                            Mgt.

  ==========================================================================

    However, if you want to have some fun and kick some butt, all you have to
do is break ALL of the above rules.<G> I put a couple extra rooms and traps in
just for fun/experimentation. Light levels, funky doors, animated walls, that
sort of thing. It's fun to figure it out the first time, but after that it's
easy. This is not a real level, just a lark.

    There is no Exit installed as of yet. There are a few Mirror spots, dang.

    I think this level is suffering from "banana" syndrome -- like the little
kid said, "I know how to spell it, I just don't know when to stop".

Enjoy

I've played it for about 90 minutes now and it's HARD. I mean EXTRA EXTRA
HARD!! Most spots seem to be pretty fair - you just have to take them in
the right order. Anyone without heavy-duty chainsaw combat skills can kiss
their butt goodbye. The maze is pure Doom terror at its finest. This
isn't a very large level, but the maze has so much packed into a small area
that the level seems huge. An absolute must-have.

The level seemed a little slow. He didn't mention using REJECT, so that
would probably speed things up a bit. But it doesn't matter, because the
WAD isn't very good anyway. Start off running around a spider and things
don't get very fair after that. The "extra" level 9 is ok. But its very
short and not good enough to bother downloading it.

     This level doesn't work as well as anything but the first level in an
episode (a purely esthetic consideration, to be sure), as the players start
out outside the structure. This doesn't prevent you from moving it
elsewhere; it's just an incongruous transition.

     This is a thinking player's level; there's a puzzle built into the
design. You are shown the soul sphere for the level; it's in plain view
almost at the start. Your problem is to get to it; there are several things
you have to do in order to get to it, and if you don't do it right, you'll
never be able to reach it. In addition, you will probably cut yourself out
of getting 100% secrets and kills unless you solve the puzzle.

                          start this level you need help. Heaven is simply
                          a large stockpile of weapons, armor, and health
                          bonuses (Apparently the NRA was right). There are
                          also a few of Hell's more putrid denizens placed
                          in cages for your safety and viewing pleasure, so
                          take the opportunity to waste them. Every type of
                          weapon is available in Heaven except for the BFG
                          (is there one? Go to Hell to find out). Hell is a
                          fairly linear place. In Single Player Mode if you
                          die in Hell you are dead and thats that, but for
                          Multi-Player mode, measures have been taken to
                          ensure that any players that die can re-enter
                          Hell safely many times over. This level isn't
                          meant to be tricky or witty, it is purely kill

What started out as a great idea ran out of steam by the end. You get
armed to the teeth and then you go hunting - a room full of humans, cool -
a room full of imps, shotgun time - a room full of demons, plasma power - a
bunch of cacodemons, rocket target practice. Even the Spiderdemon seemed
easy with a full load of plasma gun. Then a Cyberdemon is next with very
little maneuvering room. And if you survive that, you have to get around
8! Barons to get to the exit. The first half of this level is pure fun.
The second half is just stupid. If you like playing half a level, pick
this one up, otherwise pass.

			  much else he could do -- all of the goddesses
			  were on vacations in far away lands, and Persephone

			  and see if he'll be able to find the way out. Sadly

No whimpy old puck, we use genuine living people!!!! (properly
armored as to avoid nasty corpses)

No penalties at all!!! (Use that BFG slapshot on the opponent!!!)

No scoring!! (well, you can keep track of it...)

The 'puck' (well we call him 'Puck' cause he's short and green...) is in the
center. Blast the puck into the opposing team's goal using any weapon you
want. Shotgun play him! Rocket him! Chaingun him! Plasma him! Even BFG him!
The only thing that counts is getting him into the goal... If your
opponent has the puck, steal it, blast him, anything, just don't let him
score with it!!!!

                          not an impossible level and is quite solvable within

                          There are no mechanical differences between my first
                          release and this release. In this release I improved
                          Y alignment, changed some textures, and added a few
                          more dead bodies here and there. If you happen to
                          have the first release, you probably got it from one
                          of my friends.
                          This wad is the first of a pseudo episode 4 series.
                          Play difficulty is at least as difficult as the
                          mid-episode 3 levels when set to ultra-violence.

Additional Credits to : Absolutely nobody. Why should I. I'm a greedy

Very challenging. It's just short of a must-have level because of a series
of jumps you must make that are rather frustrating and annoying. Lets

Jailbait is a rather large level in which you start out in jail and have
to fight your way out. Because of many of the narrow ledges and surprise
confrontations I think it probably a pretty challenging level (but great
fun). Take heart, I have gotten through several times on the hardest
level without dying (but I know where everything is). The medium level is
the same minus the bulls (or centaurs).

I really want to hear feedback on this level, suggestions for improvement,
bug fixing suggestions, etc., so please email me at

Another Laura Beyer demo. This one is supposed to be a haunted house. I
guess I get overly critical when someone takes Doom and tries to change the
entire point of the game. OK, this is a haunted house and there are guys
running around with shotguns. But what does a Cacodemon or a Baron have to
do with a haunted house. Either change everything (like Alien Doom) or
just make a Doom level. This level contains a 200k WAD and then a 1.5
meg!! sound file containing too many "cutesy" sounds. C'mon, this is Doom,
I don't want to hear people singing. The graphics are top notch and there
are many very original techniques used (I have never seen 'moving shadows'
before - that blew me away), but I think they need a 'supervisor' to point
them in the right direction. These could be great WADs, but they're not
quite there yet.

This is another Laura Beyer demo for their add-on levels they are selling
for Doom. I'm not sure which one came out first - this one or DOOMFX2.ZIP
- DOOMFX2 sucks, this one is great. New background music, new graphics,
new sounds all add-up for a truly frightening experience. The only
drawback is that they use a batch file which alters your DOOM.WAD and then
doesn't restore it back to normal. Hopefully they have put everything into
their add-on WAD instead now, which (I think?) is possible with the newest
DEU. But either way, get this one.

Description:

This is the first in a series of new wads. This is a completely new
level and is not based on any previous level (from ID or elsewhere).
My plan is to construct nine new levels and then create a new "episode"
that will replace episode 1 (but will require registered Doom to run).

I have tried this level at all difficulty levels. It is possible to
complete but I thought it was hard (and I know where everything is).
Of course, I hardly qualify as a "world class doom player" but it seemed
pretty challenging to me. I have not tried it in multiplayer mode so
I can not say for sure that it can be done but I believe it can.

Author:   	Tony L. Hayes (hayes@ll.mit.edu)
Wad Tools:	Deu 5.0 and BSP 1.0
Loads As: Episode 1 Level 2 (requires registered doom)

Description:

This is the second in a series of new wads. This is a completely new
level and is not based on any previous level (from ID or elsewhere).

This level is a bigger then level 1 and uses nicer effects. Note the
neat three part door near the end.

Again, this level support different levels of difficulty and I have
played it at all levels (except multi-player). It support all four
players in coop or deathmatch modes. Unlike level 1 (which is NOT
a good deathmatch level but is ok for solo or coop play) level 2 does
make a good deathmatch level (for those of you who want them) as well
as solo and coop.

Comments are always welcome!

Look for level three in 1 - 2 weeks.

Level 1 was quite good. A easy-paced start ending up with you, two Barons
and a bunch of Cacodemons running like mad through some large, dark
caverns. Level 2 was not quite as good. It has one of my pet peeves - a
passageway necessary to continue is behind a hidden door - a WELL hidden
door, so you have to run around the maze banging on all the walls looking
for it - that's just a waste of time. Hopefully the next in the series
will continue the gameplay of one. For now, pick up Legend1 and skip the
2nd...until he finishes them all. Done yet, Tony?!?! ;)

One of the best! Huge layout - the open area with the 'mountains' is

        This is a PWAD file that replaces Episode 2 Map 1 in the REGISTERED
version of Doom. It is not a very large level but is of fair size (for a
level 1). There may be a future version of it in which I will add more if
there's any point so please send your comments and suggestions to me. Please
be kind, this IS my first wad.
        There is some cases in which monsters will appear only on certain
skill levels, but I did not put very much effort into this part of the wad.
I seemed to have some trouble with making switches look the way they are
supposed to but you should be able to at least recognize them.
        I don't care what you do with this WAD as long as you give me credit
 for creating it. (And I know how desperate you'll all be to include it in
 `Greatest Hits' packages, :) yeah right). I used Deu 5.0 and BSP 1.0 to
 create this WAD BTW so thanks to the author of those fine programs and of
 course, thank you ID!
        I guess that's about all I have to say about it so try it out and let
 me know if it sucks. :)

appear. Almost as exciting as watching flies.

	     has been acheived. Please email any comments to above address.
Description:
	A Deathmatch (although single player is supported on one level
	of play) level. Mid-sized so that players run into each other
	often enough, but all areas have multiple connections to other
	areas so there are no traps. Three big rooms, nicknamed "The
	Prison", "The Skull Room", and "The Arena". These rooms have various
	windows, teleports, and interconnecting passageways between them.
	Plenty of health, ammo and armor to go around. Designed as a long
	lasting deathmatch level. The three weapons in the multiplayer
	game are the shotgun, rocket launcher, and one chainsaw. In the single
	player game, a chain gun is added.
	Three secrets, including the "Happy Room".

                          level is an attempt to mirror the
                          mood and detailed maps that made the
                          original game so much fun. Stress
                          was placed on QUALITY. Some WAD
                          files floating around have a thrown
                          together feel.

The WAD file itself is very large because of the number of new sounds and
graphics that were added. I usually don't like when someone replaces a
sound or two but in this case I thought it was pretty good. Almost every
sound was replaced from a variety of the "sound packs" that are floating
around - Beavis and Butthead, Eddie Murphy, Monty Python, and many others
"lend their talents" to this WAD file. The WAD itself is an average
challenge but still worth playing.

The level was great - lots of non-stop action. Then I got to a place where
there was a door that wasn't there. I opened it and the ground on the
entire level moved up. If that sounds strange to you, then you're right.
It's called a bug and its a doozy. Because of this, I couldn't continue at
all on the level.

This started out fairly nice, but about halfway through I was debating
whether or not I should cheat to check out the rest of the level or
continue in legit mode to finish it fair and square. I made the right
choice and cheated. In the full text, he says there is a CyberDemon in
here but you don't have to kill it. Tell that to the Cyberdemon. It's
still going to fire at you. I have never seen any WAD except id's that
properly used the Cyberdemon and this is no exception. This WAD probably
isn't impossible. But it's got just enough flaws to make it a pain in the
butt.  Pass.

Huge and fairly interesting layout. It could be a damn good WAD, but it
needs about twice as many creatures. At one point, more than halfway
through the WAD, you get a berseck pack. If you had picked it up earlier
with about half as much ammo, it would have been a little more interesting.

Like the best WADs in Doom's original levels, in this WAD, you don't hunt -
you are hunted. VERY huge, complex layout. Just enough ammo to keep you
happy but not cocky. Medikits are there, but you'll be walking around
wounded for most of the game.

Neither level is bad - NITRO1 has some good action. My problem with them
is that half the doors are completely hidden. Its dull as hell to spend
half you time poking all the walls to find a door. Unless you like
door-hunting instead of monster-hunting, skip these.

Very nice - especially for a first attempt. The level design is excellent.
The only flaw is that you get an extreme buildup of weapons and don't use
them. With the fully-loaded BFG I had at the end of the level, I was
expecting a Cyber or Spider, but nothing.

Description :Welcome to the Pleasure Dome! This is where all of
			the posessed soldiers and sargents come to watch
			those marines die who will not succumb to posession
			by the demons infesting the world. This level is
			like the Roman Coloseums of old, except that you are
			the poor slob about to be fed to the beasts.
			  They do give you a shotgun to try to duke it out
			with, but they don't expect you to last long. They
			just hope that your death will be entertaining.

Notes :The level has been designed so you can play it
			in single player, multiplayer, and deathmatch.
			Deathmatch is especially good because everything is
			interconnected and there are several good sniper
			spots. I have not included any big nasties (such
			as the Cyber-Demon or Spider-Demon), but this would
			make a perfect setting for them if you want to modify
			the level.
			  I spent a lot of time trying to make the level look
			good, so tell me if you find something that makes you
			just puke. I also only used natural light everywhere.
			There are only 2 dark areas, but you never fight in
			those areas -- just collect goodies. I even put in
			some light-amp goggels in those areas.
			  The only time you will appreciate these things is
			when the level is empty because you don't have time
			to sit and enjoy the scenery.

This was one helluva wad to finish the first time. But after about a dozen
tries, I figured out a strategy to stay alive. But after I had been
through the entire level, I didn't have nearly enough ammo to finish off
the creatures in the courtyard. I exited quite bummed. Then, of course, I
read the description of the WAD...dark areas?..secrets! I went back, got
all the good stuff and kicked some ass. So the lesson here is - there is
plenty of ammo in this level, just look a bit.

          PSYCHO DEATH LEVEL by Kyle Kenny 7/11/94

	Thanks for downloading my level, which I call the Psycho Death Level.
To run this level, first copy it to your DOOM directory and type:
			DOOM -FILE PSYCHO.WAD
Then select Knee-deep In the dead (Episode 1), select any difficulty level,
and PREPARE TO DIE!!! This level is the toughest I have seen. I am
convinced that it is IMPOSSIBLE to beat on the NIGHTMARE difficulty level
(no codes!)
Even I can't beat this level without using cheat codes, and I consider
myself rather good at DOOM (plus, I made the level). If you've played the
level and can't get out, remember to try every wall. You never know where
you'll find a secret door...
	I've made other DOOM levels, but this is my best one so far. One is
called BKWAD.WAD, and it is very small and tough, much like this one. You can
give this level to anyone you want (kind of like "shareware") and if you
want you can even edit it. I made this level from scratch using DEU 5.2.
It can be used as a DEATHMATCH level, co-operative, or single-player.
	If you have questions, comments, or CONSTRUCTIVE criticism, you can
contact me by E-mail (please do!) at:

I'm not sure if there's a space in there...

Thanks again and good luck,

AOL WAD authors - what can I say? ;)
The very-little-thought-involved standard WAD. A few boxes as rooms.
Throw in a lot of ammo and literally a few hundred creatures mostly in one

Hoo-ha!  Another office WAD.  I don't think I've ever played a good
'office' WAD and I doubt I ever will. If you don't have the originality to
create something besides your office, you probably won't create a good WAD.
No exception here.

Very nice action WAD. As the author says - not huge, no Cybers chasing you
around, but you'll be up to your buttcheeks in imps with not as many

Maybe I'm getting soft. Maybe I've played too many cheesy PWADs and
forgotten those long days in January when I would be stuck on an original
id level for days. But maybe not. These levels are TOO big and complex
for me. It's not that I don't like big levels - but each one has dozens of
switches and levers to push, pull, and throw (YES!) to get to the exit.
Halfway through the third level, I was getting bored. It was more like
mapping a Wizardry level than playing Doom. If you love to wander around
aimlessly, this is for you. If not, pass.

I reviewed this once and didn't like it. HOM and other bugs. But I was
using v1.1 so I thought I'd try it on 1.9 and see if the HOM and other bad
things went away. The HOM was gone, but now you get teleported to a room
you can't get out of unless you have the blue key. But you didn't get the
blue key yet! My original review stands - pass on this one.

                          designed primarily for single player games,
                          but has multi-player starts, and an interesting
                          consession for DeathMatch, though the map was not
                          designed for DeathMatch. This map took over
                          150 "man-hours" to create, and outgrew both
                          DEU 5.0 and DEU 5.1's memory allocation schemes.
                          There are no "step wrong and die" traps - If you can
                          get into an area (without cheating) you can get out.
                          There are secrets, hidden doors and switches galore

I should have stopped as soon as I entered the almost pitch-black caverns
with walls that didn't show up on the auto-map. But I kept playing and was

is almost zilch. That averages out to a failing grade. Pass.

                          inappropriate or misaligned textures, and very
                          hard >:)
                          Anyway, here it is in the words of the Author...

DESCRIPTION

KILL, KILL, AND KILL SOME MORE.

Puzzle wads really shit me off!! All that happens is you die 30 times trying
to work out what combination to press the buttons (or whatever), and then
never look at it again. I love playing DOOM, and I like new walls
and doors in the same way that I like new scenery. What I had in mind when I
started designing this level was something to give a challenge to the most
seasoned DOOM player. I believe that I have succeeded.

This level does have it's fair share of tricks and traps, but basically I
see them as just being new ways of introducing beasties onto unsuspecting
(or just complacent) players. Words of warning appear below:

1) The level gets tough from the word go. Now you can't say that I
        didn't warn you.

2) If it looks like a trap, then it probably is. NB - I design traps
        to KILL, not just scare. If you get killed the first time (and you
        probably will), don't get too discouraged. Shit happens.

3) a big APOLOGY to those people who hate it when wad authors use
        darkness excessively as a way of making mosters nastier. My
        darkened maze area has been known to piss the play testers off,
        but in consideration of this there are two (2) sets of light amp.
        goggles available. Both are very hard to get. One is obvious (just
        don't get killed), and the other is in a secret area that shows
        up on the computer map.

4) If you can't find the red key, don't despair - it isn't hidden,
        probably just disguised by monster bodies. Go and have another look.

5) If you think that it is too hard, then play it on an easier level.
        'Hurt Me Plenty' is about equivalent to standard 'Ultra Violence'.
        Don't feel ashamed - even I die about 50% of the time.

Like he says "...apology to those people who hate excessive darkness...".
I've said it before - if you make a good WAD, you don't need darkness to
make it harder. It's great when you see people include a demo that shows
them running around in complete darkness picking up objects because they
know EXACTLY where they are. Anyway, I'm ranting now. Skip this one.

From Rick DeMar's Original SHOWDOWN!

I couldn't have been more impressed or addicted to real brow bending
action in a PWAD until I ran across Rick DeMar's SHOWDOWN.WAD file.
Even though the original PWAD needed some adjustments, it really was
a SHOWDOWN indeed! With express permission from Rick DeMar via Email
I am releasing this PWAD as SHOWDWN2.WAD which contains two more
steps to getting out of the literal blood-bath SHOWDOWN originally
contained. Rick DeMar's balance of a small map with mega monsters is
really great as this will allow it to run smoothly when at the very
peak of the battle. I hope you enjoy playing and YES there are many
ways to beat this map, it's all just a true matter of your attitude.

Enjoy,

Vance Andrew Blevins

P.S. This PWAD plays GREAT in Cooperative mode! Deathmatch feels just
     about like playing cooperatively! UV+ mode? I don't think so....

Rockets, plasma, shotgun, chaingun - use em all! You've got literally a
few hundred creatures to kill in this WAD and usually they're are attacking
a few dozen at a time. It seems like a bitch at first but it's really not
that hard once you get the hang of it, but still loads of fun, and not very
linear either. There are a number of ways you could go about this (and ten
times as many ways to die!) Another must-have.

                          swang across, the elevators Luke, Han, and
                          Chewie entered on their way to the detention
                          level, and the large corridor with the
                          blast doors. The blueprints covered 1/6 of
                          the level, so I had to make up the rest.

                          Level 2 consists of the detention level, the
                          trash copmactor, and the security station
                          from the RPG. I copied some of the sections
                          for deathmatch reasons.

                                HINT: follow Leia's technique on
                                      getting to the trash compactor

Absolutely huge layout. This is the first level that has ever slowed down
my 486/66 (that was with version 1, version 2 now uses REJECT10 which made
the WAD much more playable). Ultra-violence is ULTRA ULTRA hard! I
haven't come close to finishing even half the level yet. Because of the
layout, the monsters can basically roam the entire level, so you never know
when something will come up behind you. Every single piece of ammo must be
conserved - finding the chainsaw early on would probably help a lot.

The second level is a big letdown from the first. The design is just as
well done as the first, but the gameplay is very poor.

Very well done layout. One of the few WADs that truly has a theme to it

The add-on graphics are some of the best I've ever seen. The add-on sounds
are worthless. The level is quite good - it starts out VERY hard and then
gets easy in the middle. There is a Cyberdemon at the end, but it's done
in a way that made him easy to kill. This level was very close to being a
"must-have", it just needed to be a little more consistent.

                          This level is designed as your average modern day
                          movie theater, with a few twists. Run through your
                          local cinema blasting all those annoying patrons
                          in your way, demanding that they decrease the

                          brought with them?  Good luck!

Level notes : This level is big with lots of stuff. It will run
                          slowly on slow computers. I tried to design it to
                          be difficult, but not impossible, with the theory

I designed this level specifically for me and my friends, who like the final
level in multiplayer games to be a blast-fest with lots of monsters (you
know, "the final" battle). For others who like levels where your primary
opponent is monsters, this is for you. As in all my levels, this is
"professionally" designed (wall textures align properly, careful choice
and variety of room settings, exits labelled, ammo/supplies placed prudently
etc.).

And the final count is...2 Spiderdemons and 7 Cyberdemons, plus numerous

my board. But for some strange reason, I kept it to try it once first.
Holy mutha f*&$& (&$(*&!!!
It doesn't get much more intense than this. When you start out, you are in
an inverted pyramid where EVERY creature has a shot at you. It took me
about a dozen tries to get past that. Then it gets mellow for a few
minutes in a maze. Then another highly original bloodfest. This basically
sums it up. The first (and only) time I finished, I had 3 shells left and
3% health left. This rides that fine line between hard and too hard, but
it can be done. An absolute must but certainly not for the squeamish or
easily shaken.

                        rating of 3.5

Description : The troops the UCA sent into the
                        Tibetan base failed to get past the
                        helipad. Therefore it's up to you to
                        crawl in through the caverns upon which
                        the base was built. Within the caverns
                        is a deserted monestary where the
                        scientists, working at the base, have
                        been testing with radioactives. Your
                        job is to find out what happened in the
                        base and TAKE IT BACK !!!!

                          Likely my last WAD, at least for the time
                          being. Nothing like going out with a
                          bang!

                 Level 1: This level is pretty difficult, with little
                          ammo or health, and monsters from all sorts
                          of triggered doors. Also, heavy on the
                          triggers and switches. (My specialty! :')
                          Cool places include an expansive cavern and
                          a couple "pseudo-mazes".
                 Level 2: This level is an exhibition of really cool
                          designs, including a number of places with
                          manual light-sourcing, and every other
                          neat thing I could think of. Visually
                          entertaining, fun to play.
                 Level 3: Well, this one is just cool. Hard, fun,
                          some caverns, a bunch outdoors. If you
                          can't find all the secrets... have you
                          gone through every teleporter? A nice

Nearly impossible? NOT! The start and end of this WAD is an inverted
pyramid - you at the bottom, lots of creatures on the ledges above and you
have to fight your way up. This has been done before and has certainly
been done BETTER before. In between, there are a few walls that open up
but the toughest thing thrown at you are a few cacodemons. Nearly
impossible? Nearly impossible not to finish it on the first attempt.

On L7, at one point you have to run through a 'maze' of poison. On both
levels, the author has an extreme fondness for shoving a Cacodemon or Baron
in front of you with little room to manuever. Dumb, dumb, dumb. And the
'new music' is from Star Wars. So much for following a theme. Pass.

    Welcome to uca.zip. This mission replaces e2m1. This is also thefirst
    WAD I've constructed, using DEU5.1 and BSP1.0. I hope you enjoy it.
    If so, or if not, please give me feedback so I know how to make my next
    one even better.

    This is a slightly revised version of UCA. Players probably won't
    notice any real changes in gameplay. Anyways, UCA now supports
    coop player mode but NOT deathmatch. I probably wouldn't have
    bothered to upload this revised version, except that the original
    uploaded version somehow "disappeared." So, I am re-uploading, and
    why not make a few small changes? :)

    UCA is challenging, but definitely possible to complete. Believe me,
    I've play-tested it often enough. :-)

    If you enjoy UCA, try out TALPOIDA, the follow-up. And after
    TALPOIDA, the storyline continues in DIOPATRA. I am currently
    figuring out what I want to do for the fourth level in my hopefully
    9-level episode.

    After all, your soldier is still stuck and lost within the
    hostile base....he still has to make it back to the surface alive
    to make rendezvous with the Gateway... :-)

    Happy Hunting!

This has some good parts but it has some bad ones also. There's this
multi-entrance jump hallway you have to pass through a few dozen times that
gets old after the 2nd time. That's the major flaw and there's nothing
that great in here that made up for it.

Hi all, this is an improved version of the original, and quite
acclaimed pwad, WANTON. I've taken all the suggestions from the
original post (wanton was actually one of the first full levels
created for doom) and tried to implement them to make a better pwad.
This level will also be released for doom2 as WANTON2.

Enjoy!

Author                  : Jason Franklin
Email Address           : jayson@cs.tamu.edu
Short Description : Wanton is a large level split into four
        		  trianglular sections and a large middle
			  arena. This level is a slugfest! I have
			  gone to great extents to make it a good
			  deathmatch level as well as a good single
			  player level.

Description : Take on the hellish creatures of doom on
			  their own turf! First, you will face flying
			  skulls on a precarious path in their dark
			  and fiery home (with teleporters should you
			  accidently slip "ooops"). Then it's off to
			  the playground of the cacos a place of great
                          heights and quite a bit of slime. Should you
			  be lucky enough to survive that, you will be
			  plunged into the blood maze of the demons. A
			  rather disgusting place where even the walls
			  bleed and most likely so will your knuckles.
			  You will find very little ammo here, bezerk
			  is your only friend, and the return trip is
			  even worse. Finally, you will be roasted in
			  the cave of the barons and that's still not
			  the end. To reach the exit you will return
			  to the arena, which should be filled with
			  corpses already, and cower in front of the
			  final and the largest (quite possibly) horde
			  of hell spawn ever assembled. This level is
			  WANTON.

Comments via email please, but if you wanna complain please explain your
point: "this sucks" is unhelpful. "This is great" is unhelpful, but sure
feels good.

Description : If you liked WOODHALL, you're gonna love this.
I've made the whole level much prettier, and aligned all the textures
properly (thanks, Raphael.) No more boring identical rectangular rooms.
I've cut the light levels a bit to reduce the shimmer, and fixed numerous
small map and monster behaviour bugs. The previous version proved too easy,
so there's lots less health and a few extra critters. Favourite playtester
comment is still "_How_ many imps?" If you haven't played WOODHALL, it's
set in a midsized wooden building; I've tried not only to avoid playing
"Collect all the textures", but use only a few to create continuity. It's
low-tech: you're using the shotgun throughout (almost), on sarges, imps,
troopers and the odd demon. It contains several unpleasant surprises. The
use of excessive gamma correction is not recommended: it ruins the looks of
the level, and should prove unnecessary anyway, as the level is well-lit.
It's most fun on first playing, as the surprises ain't so afterwards. There
is no HOM AFAIK, and texture alignment seems to be fine, by and large.
There is no attack in the room you start in.

                             Level one is just being cute, and gives

                             Level two is short, and is based on a

All three levels are fairly original and I think that level 3 would be
pretty good even with the two Cyberdemons that are in it - except there
seems to be a bug or two in level three. Now that I've finished playing
it, I think I could probably find a way around these "bugs" but it's not
worth it. Because of this, I can't recommend these.
