When doing my D2M exam I noticed that Map28 might go Tyson style.
So I requested a D2T challenge, but became discouraged when it came
with the DREADED 06 in the hard category. 06 and 04 are so hard I
think there should be a separate title for people who can do them.
Both have no berserk pack, and punching without it is a skill I
have never figured out, much less mastered.

It's a good thing I saved this exam for last. I had to draw on
every ounce of experience and use every trick in the book to survive
10 and 28. My D1T experience was particularly helpful in 10.

MAP01: It was a lucky break getting this level as easy. Chainsaw only, 2:16.

MAP05: Again perhaps the easiest of the mediums. I make my usual mad dash
for the berserk pack, after that it's quite simple. I walk around
almost the whole level at over 100% health, then screw up badly
at the end. I crawl across the finish at 18% health! 25:31.

MAP10: If you count the bullets on this one, there are enough to kill
the Cyberdemon and Arachnotrons. So the strategy is that you
must kill everything else with fist or chainsaw (not quite
true, because the Arachnotrons are weakened in monster battles).
This level has 279 monsters on it, more than any other DOOM 2
(or 1) level, so it's not surprising this is a VERY long battle.

I apologize for the length of this lmp, I can't imagine anybody
watching the whole thing. If your machine is fast enough, I
strongly advise watching this using -timedemo; after the first
15 minutes it's all janitorial mop-up work. I am pretty
conservative much of the time (hiding behind corners even for
pistol dudes) because I didn't want to have to redo it. The
Cyberdemon shoot-out starts at the 1 hour mark and is the most
boring battle you will ever see, but I couldn't see any (safe)
way to speed it up. So if you even get that far, go out for
pizza when the Cybie battle starts, it takes about 470 bullets
and 25 minutes to kill him.

If anyone else has to record this one (I pity you), there is one neat
trick you can use against the Cyberdemon. When you open the blue door
and kill the 4 imps, Cybie will hear you and sometimes he comes
out to the door, but he's too tall to walk through it. The room
where you are is dark (don't stand in the light!!), and he can't
see you to fire at you, so you can pump bullets into him from just
a few feet away (scary at first, but safe). I was hoping this
would happen in this recording but he went into his usual teleport
routine. When he gets into that mode there is no way to get him
       to the blue door.

Lmp "highlights" to watch for (or plan pizza around):
          * The initial chaos finally ends: 15 minutes
          * First invulnerability used: 34 minutes
          * Megasphere is reached: 45 minutes
          * Tedious Cyberdemon battle begins: 1 hour
          * Cyberdemon dies!!!!!!:             1 hour, 25 minutes
          * Exit is reached with 100% kills: 1 hour, 33 minutes!!!!!!!

MAP28: I can hear it now: "2 Spider Masterminds, 12 Arachnotrons,
17 Revenants, 4 Arch Viles, is he nuts claiming this goes Tyson??"
Well, it can be done. The thing that makes it possible are the 5
invulnerability spheres, which can be used in a lot of ways.
The best strategy took me months to figure out, though.

A couple of D2T title holders remark about crossing off levels
with Arch Viles. What a mistake! Arch Viles are actually
rather wimpy beasts and their revival skills can be turned
to your advantage by getting you over 100% kills while leaving
some of the nastier monsters alive. If you could arrange an
Arch Vile and pistol dude in a room where you could hide from the
flaming attacks, you could generate an unlimited supply of bullets!!

So AT FIRST I was going to finish this level by killing the same
imp 10-20 times and exiting with some revenants and spiders alive.
By the rules this is completely legal (all you need is 100% kills
or greater) but I know some people would feel leaving the level
with several monsters alive was cheating, and I didn't feel very
comfortable about it myself. After playing this level more and more
I became convinced it could even be done Tyson style with no monster
alive at the end. This took many tries, but I finally did it.

Unfortunately, this recording isn't as great as I had hoped. From
saved games I was able to do it in about 45 minutes. But what happens
in the spider lair is rather unpredictable - you have to kill off
the survivors with bullets and often you run out of ammo. For the
first half of this lmp I figure I'm hosed because both Spider
Masterminds survive the initial battle. This was the first time
I had ever seen this happen. I spend a lot of time spying on the
spiders, thinking the situation is hopeless, and I also have an
unusually hard time with the pain elementals. I have a much better
recording of this but right near the end, I decided to finish with
real style by punching out a revenant, and he trapped me in a corner
and next thing I knew I was dead. So in this recording I am very
conservative (slow) at the end, and there is another incredibly
boring pistol shoot out, this time with a Spider Mastermind.
This was about my 30th attempt, and the 5th time I had gotten
past the initial room, so I didn't want to redo it.
Total length: 1 hour and 5 minutes, nothing left alive, 103% kills.

I had a tough time deciding how to rate this one - it is similar
in difficulty to 08, I think. But a different type of hard from
04 and 06. If any new D2T does this level, I would request
that you exit with no monster alive, as I did. If you
use the Arch Vile trick and exit with the worst nasties alive
then possibly this level is only medium.

FREE: Map07 Tyson style!! I punch out all the Mancubuses and then
use bullets on the Arachnotrons. Pretty cool, huh??
One minor detail: this lmp was recorded with skill level 2. ;-)
Still, it shows that it's possible to punch out a Mancubus,
although at this skill level their fireballs aren't as
damaging as in UV. I tried punching out an Arachnotron and this
is a lot tougher, but it may be possible. Looks like it would
take about 5 minutes of near perfect hit'n'run work. 6:39.

Notes: I discovered a neat trick for replaying Tyson recordings,
the -timedemo command. On my P166, I can replay my Map10
       in a blistering 45 minutes!

I used to think the chainsaw was the best Tyson weapon, but
in this exam I realized that berserk fist is often superior.
The only tough monsters the chainsaw seems to work better on are
Cacodemons, Revenants, and Pain Elementals. When you are
invulnerable it is almost always faster to kill with berserk fist.
It only takes about 5 good punches to take out an Arch Vile (much
longer with the chainsaw). This fact is what makes Map28 possible.

Author I remember first trying Level 10 last October, I finally got to
Info: the end using the cheat codes. This was the first time I had
ever seen a Cyberdemon, and I tried for hours but couldn't
survive more than a minute facing him (strafing, what's that?).
I couldn't believe how many rockets he could absorb. This was about
the time I made up the "Doom Honorific Titles for the Masses", now a
part of the DHT web page.

I find it remarkable that 8 months later I have completed the same
level using only fist, pistol and chainsaw! It has been a fun
journey, and I would like to thank **Frank Stajano** in particular
for creating and maintaining this contest.

This is now my 8th title overall and final remaining advanced title:
            Doom 2 Grand Master
            Doom 2 Speedy Gonzales
            Doom 2 Master
            Doom 2 Incubus
            Doom 1 Incubus
            Doom 1 Grand Master
            Doom 1 Tyson
and now ... Doom 2 Tyson!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
