I started way back using the keyboard only. I got slaughtered by a friend

the puddle on the floor most of the time.

What's good in FREE.LMP
-----------------------
I had originally planned to do a 4 player deathmatch on level E1M5
(Phobos Lab) with monsters at Ultra-Violence level. But, one of my
three targets has a sound card that won't work with the sound drivers
in the 1.6beta version of DOOM shareware. So, that idea got scrapped.

So, instead, I made a solo Ultra-Violence recording of E1M5. The style
point is that I use whatever weapon comes up in my hand. I don't change
anything. If I run out of ammo, I let the system pick the new weapon.
And, I play DOOM the way it was meant to be played -- kill everything
that moves with the weapon in your hand. I don't mean to knock anyone
who can get the critters to kill each other -- heck, sometimes its harder
to keep them from going after each other. But, the core pleasure in the
game (for me) is killing them myself. So I did.

There's some nice chainsaw work in here. Anyone who thinks that the
chainsaw is not an effective weapon (even against shooting monsters)
should watch this. I think I've shown that using the chainsaw
"surgically" can be VERY effective.

Version of DOOM used
--------------------
1.2 patched to level 1.666. I waited until this was available to
complete this test because I wanted to make use of the -MAXDEMO feature.
I also wanted to include the ranking screen at the end of each recording
to verify that I completed each level with 100% kills and 100% secrets.

Comments
--------
Well, I have to say that the patch to make 1.2 run like 1.666 is great
and saved my butt in this due to the time required to finish E2M4.
Plus, having the stat screen included at the end lets me rest easy
in the knowledge that I really got them all.

E1M1 (Hangar)
-------------
Not much to say. Anyone should be able to finish this level at UV.
I thought about trying to do it in par, but 30 seconds is just not
enough time to kill everything. So, I decided to try trick shots
at long range and and a few other trick shots.

E2M4 (Deimos Lab)
-----------------
This was the hardest level to complete due to its size. I also ran into
a severe ammunition shortage when I played using my traditional style.
So, I had to make much more use of the berserk fist than I normally do.
As I mentioned earlier, I prefer to kill things rather than to have them
kill one another. So, I didn't spend much time trying to get them to
shoot at each other. I did spend a bunch of time being overly cautious
about my ammo count. You'll see where I miss calculated, or misexecuted
a fist attack and had to resort to the good old shotgun.

E3M9 (Warrens)
--------------
I thought this was going to be the hardest level. So, I watched the
records that other DM's had made. I started feeling like I was watching
the tapes from a football game and analyzing the weakness of the defense.
All of the recordings made use of the second Invulnerability to take out
the Cacodemons with a chainsaw. I did something different which I think
is a much more judicious use of the "you can't hurt me" mode.

Fists work best on the demons in narrow corridors. This is because the
can't weave back and forth so you can hit without aiming much. Just
run at them and punch. Running at them can triple the damage your fist
does (very effective when you are beserk).

General
-------
Playing the levels with the DM objective made the game a lot more fun.
It had been getting a bit stale. And, it actually became a family
event. My wife thought it would be really cool if I became a "Doom Master".
So, she kept the kids off of my lap for a few hours one Sunday afternoon
while I made my recordings.

Now, if I could just convince my office manager to change the title on
my business cards...
